Biography

Dr. Ryan is an Instructor of Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania, working primarily with the Penn Statistics in Imaging and Visualization Endeavor (PennSIVE). Prior to her current position, she worked as a graduate research assistant at National Jewish Health and the University of Colorado, graduating with a PhD in Biostatistics in Summer 2020. She has over six years of statistical and data analysis experience, with special emphasis on statistical and machine-learning methodologies for medical imaging data. She has developed user-friendly software for processing and analysis of computed tomography (CT) scans of the lung, including software for lung segmentation, template creation and radiomic analyses. Additionally, she has research interests in spatial modeling of the lung and medical image clustering analyses utilizing deep learning. Outside of research, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and various activities, including hiking, skiing, volleyball and ping pong.

Accomplishments

Gertrude Cox Scholarship Honorable Mention

To Sarah Ryan for academic achievement in pursuit of a PhD in Biostatistics at the Colorado School of Public Health, biostatistical research advances related to image analysis, and exceptional leadership in her local statistical community.

Marvin Porter Award

This is given to an outstanding MS Biostatistics student who has completed the first year and passed the first written Qualifying exam at the MS level. It is partially a cash award to honor Marvin Porter, a biometrics graduate student who died in a climbing accident in 1991. It is funded from the interest on a trust set up by biometrics and biophysics graduate students contemporary to Marvin Porter.

Frances Rogers Student Research Honor Lecture

The France Rogers award is given to one senior biology major annually for meritorious undergraduate research as part of their BIO 197 Bachelor of Sciences research project. The award is largely based on a summary presentation given by the student during BIO 192: Biology Seminar in the spring of each semester. The award is presented to the student selected to honor the memory of Dr. Frances Rogers, Professor of Biology, in recognition of her interest and support of the research activities of biology majors at Drake University. This award was established in 1993 and is bestowed at the conclusion of each academic year.
